If your room is small, you may want to purchase two end tables that can also double as a coffee table when guests are present. The space will not be compromised and the end tables can be returned to their original place, thus allowing for everyday traffic.
You can also purchase modern coffee tables with wheels, thereby allowing you to bring refreshments from the kitchen to the living room. It makes for easier access for the guests as well as allowing you to assume your role as the hostess.
It is most important to make sure your coffee table matches the décor of the room where you intend to place it. If you like a more modern feel, using glass, always remember that you will be cleaning fingerprints if there are little children present. The color of the wood also has to be taken into consideration, especially if the surrounding furniture is made from wood. The object is to blend in all furniture for a similar visual look.
